April in the Garden
April is an unpredictable month, with changeable and often unexpected weather that greatly adds to its charm. The growth is fast and sprawling, energetic and hopeful, the garden and the work that needs doing calls.
Giving borders a good tidy up:
We will be going over the soil and removing weeds from the roots before they take hold as the soil temperature increases. Carefully shaping and untangling shrubs that may be invading each other's space. Adding mulch and compost onto the soil to improve condition and increase water retention. Pruning, weeding, cutting back and improving the overall condition of your garden.
We will be pruning:
Hardy Fuchsia, Ferns, Abutilon, Ornamental grasses, Camellias, Mop Head Hydrangeas, early flowering Fosythias and Chaenomeles
Star plants in bloom to look out for this month:
Amelanchier lamarckii
Magnolia Stellata
Fritillaria meleagris
Prunus ‘Kanzan’
