June in the Garden
Chelsea Flower Show
At the end of May, Liza visited the Chelsea Flower show. It is a fantastic place to see planting combinations, new plant developments and the wonderful show gardens.
‘It was a wonderful experience and exploring the show gardens was a highlight. I loved the emphasis on trees this year, which give so much form and structure to a garden. I have taken notes of planting choices and beautiful colour combinations to reflect on when thinking of planting schemes in the future.’ Liza M
June in the Garden
June is now upon us and this is truly the time of rapid growth in the gardens. Our small team of gardeners will have lots to be getting on with in the gardens this month including:
Continued weeding before they become established
Pruning and shearing early flowering shrubs
Shearing evergreen shrubs
Planting
Mowing and strimming lawns
Deadheading flowers to keep the flowers continuing throughout the growing season
Watering pots in dry weather
Key plants to look out for this month:
Geums | A chelsea favourite this year, the show was bursting with the variety ‘Totally Tangerine’ it is such a cheerful flower.
Alchemilla mollis | Frothy puffs of yellow flowers, lovely for a cottage garden feel
Bearded Iris / Iris germanica | Bearing blue - violet flowers creating striking clusters of deep colour in the garden
Japanese Snowball Tree | Viburnum plicatum, a true show stopper, this deciduous shrub has distinctive tiered branches with lace like flowers and heart shaped leaves that turn red - purple in Autumn.
Mock Orange / Philadelphus | One of my favourites, a free flowering decidious shrub that bears single very fragrant pure white flowers.
Rock Rose / Cistus x cyprius | A sun - loving, bushy evergreen shrub with clusters of flowers throughout the summer.
Peonia| Another favourite, a vigroous, long lived perennial with very showy bowl shaped single or double flowers in white and shades of pink and red.
We are looking forward to seeing you in your Gardens this month,
The team at Mackintosh Martin Gardening
